I actually have kind of the same problem - didn't realize until I put on my headphones. The soundtrack, narration, etc come out as stereo, but sound effects come out of one side only. And if I'm not mistaken, ambient sounds come out of one and weapon sounds come out of the other..

Running on 64-bit Ubuntu with a saitek gamepad: 3 of the 10 buttons are not recognized, and the right analogue lever has the axes all wrong (vertical for horizontal, one of them reversed). I can play with 7 buttons, but the ability to remap the analogue axes within the game would be welcome.

In my case I had to remove lib64/libopenal.so.1 instead to get sound. Wouldn't it be safer to default to using the system's libraries if present, and if not falling back to the ones distributed with the game? As in LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<system-lib>:<game-lib> instead of LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<game-lib>:<system...
