WHAT IS THE ENCHANTED EDITION?
Trine Enchanted Edition is a port of Trine to the Trine 2 engine with additional features such as online multiplayer and mid-level saving. It also has updated visual appearance and improved gameplay – the game looks and feels even better now.
The Enchanted Editon is a free update to Trine, but the original Trine is still available; players can choose which version they want to play from the game's launcher. At the moment, the Enchanted Edition is only available for Windows on Steam, GOG.com and Humble Store. Linux and Mac versions will arrive later, though we can't give a schedule for these yet.
If you have support requests or questions, please remember to mention if you are talking about the original Trine or the Enchanted Edition. There are quite a few differences between these two because of the port to a different engine, so we will need to know the version for us to be able to help and answer questions.
DOES TRINE HAVE MULTIPLAYER?
Yes! Up to three people can play with the same computer. Unfortunately though Trine only has local co-op and does not support online or LAN multiplayer. Trine Enchanted Edition has online multiplayer, but it is currently only available as a Beta version on Steam.
DOES TRINE HAVE CONTROLLER SUPPORT?
Most gamepads can be configured to work with Trine, although it may require a bit of tinkering with the game files. It is recommended that the gamepad has at least two analog thumbsticks and eight configurable buttons. The game menus can be navigated with the gamepad, but a mouse is recommended as a backup device at all times.
You can read more about configurating your gamepad from here.
IS THERE ANY POINT IN PLAYING TRINE IF I HAVE ALREADY PLAYED TRINE 2?
Both Trine and Trine 2 do have their own, separate story lines, both games have many unique levels and the characters have different skills - so I'd say both are definitely worth a try, no matter which order you are playing them!
BEFORE POSTING SUPPORT REQUESTS
Please let us know if your issue is with the original Trine or the Enchanted Edition. There are quite a few differences between these two because of the port to a different engine, so we will need to know the version for us to be able to help and answer questions.
Also check the solutions below; most issues can be solved by using them. If none of them help, remember to report your issue in detail. Further instructions for this at the end of this post.
THE GAME DOES NOT LAUNCH
1) Try to (re-)install PhysX drivers
Usually when Trine does not start, this is because you are missing PhysX drivers or having some other issue with them. Trine requires PhysX, which is a physics library made by NVIDIA. Any graphics card will be fine with this. You can download the latest PhysX drivers from here.
Please restart your computer after installing the PhysX drivers.
2) Verify game cache
If installing the PhysX drivers does not solve your problem, you can try to verify the game cache through Steam:
Right click TRINE in your STEAM LIBRARY -> select PROPERTIES -> choose LOCAL FILES tab -> click the button to VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE.
3) Try to launch the game straight from it's exe
You can do this from the game's installation folder. It is recommended you do this as an administrator.

4) Compatibility mode
It might be worth a try to start the game in compatibility mode (e.g. Win 7 / Vista / XP SP3). You can do this through the game's .exe file.
5) Delete options.txt
Delete your options.txt file in the game's installation folder, as it might be corrupted. A new options.txt will automatically be created when you launch the game. Note that deleting the options.txt will reset all your custom settings, meaning you will have to do those again.

(just copy that path to Explorer and you'll find it)
Just try to open the game after deleting it.
6) Try to reinstall the game
Usually verifying the game cache accomplishes the same thing, but if that or nothing else above did not help, you could try a full reinstall of the game.
IF YOU HAVE GOPRO OR YOU HAVE UNINSTALLED WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER
otherwise known as Error #15 or No DLLs were found in the Waterfall procedure
- Following these instructions should fix the problem if you have GoPro installed.
- In some instances, if you have deleted Windows Media Player, re-installing it might help. You can go here for help with this.
- You can also try the instructions here if the above don't help.
HOW TO IMPORT SAVE FILES FROM TRINE TO THE ENCHANTED EDITION
When you launch the edition the first time, the game should automatically ask if you want to import the save files. If you need to do this again, you can do this manually by editing the options.txt that you can locate from %appdata%/trine1 (just copy that to Explorer and you should find it).
Locate the following line from the options.txt:
Code: Select all
setOption(gameModule, "ImportOldSaves", false)
and change the "false" to "true" and it should work.
LAG ISSUES WITH TRINE ENCHANTED EDITION ON LAPTOPS
If you experience severe lag issues even though your laptop meets the system requirements for the game, this might be due to an issue with multiple graphic cards, where the game tries to take advantage of the processor's integrated graphic solution.
To solve this issue, you can manually select the proper GPU to use for this game. Below are instructions on how to set this up with NVIDIA graphic cards. Some motherboards allow you to choose the primary graphics device through BIOS but this changes from motherboard to motherboard so it's difficult to give proper instructions on this.
- 1.Launch the NVIDIA Control panel by right clicking the desktop and selecting NVIDIA Control Panel.
2.Select "Manage 3D Settings" from left panel.
3.Select "Program Settings" tab from right panel.
4.Use the menu pull down in option 1 to locate the game executable trine1_32bit.exe. If it's not listed, remove the check mark by "Show only Programs found on this computer" and then use the browse function to locate the game’s installation folder (...\Steam\SteamApps\common\Trine\_enchanted_edition_ for the Steam version) and executable. Click "Add" to add the application to the pull down menu list.) Note: It's important you choose the correct file, trine1_32bit.exe from the Enchanted Edition folder - this solution will not work if you apply the changes to the original version's .exe file (trine.exe).
5.Use option 2 to select "High performance Nvidia processor".
6.Launch the game.
FULLSCREEN PROBLEMS WITH RETINA MACBOOK PRO
Sometimes full screen games on a Retina Macbook Pro start strangely, with the picture being weird or distorted. You can try different resolutions or launching the game in windowed mode is one option that usually helps. For that purpose, you could check out this program, which allows you to change your desktop resolution higher than the default settings and so will affect the resolution that you can play windowed games with.
If that doesn't work or you don't want to play in the windowed mode, some players have managed to fix this problem by disabling the "AUTOMATIC GRAPHICS SWITCHING" under the ENERGY SAVER section of the SYSTEM PREFERENCES. Note that this might affect your battery life, so you might want to switch it back on once you're done playing. There are also Apps to configure these settings.
You can read more about this issue from here.
