Patch downloads?

Postby moho25 » Thu Jun 09, 2016 5:14 am

I'm migrating to a new PC and have re-installed Trine 1 from disk, but all the patch download links seem to be broken. I also can't seem to locate any Patch areas on the redesigned game pages.

I see from the FAQ that the Enchanted Edition is supposed to be a "free" update, but as I mentioned, I purchased Trine on disk. Therefore, how do I download patches to update my fresh install?

It's not possible to get any updates to a physical copy of Trine, anymore more at least. However, because Trine Enchanted Edition is a free upgrade you can email pictures of the box to us at Support[at]Frozenbyte[dot]com for a Steam key. :)

Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers!

That's... disappointing. Why would you stop hosting patch downloads for your own games?

1. I don't have the box. The game is several years old, as you know. I have the disk, that is all.
2. I don't use Steam and will not use Steam.

So, basically what you're telling me is if I want updates for a game I've already purchased from you, I need to spend more money and re-purchase it (from GoG or Humble)?

I don't have much details about this, but we have moved our updates to different services. Including GOG.com and Humble Store.

We usually offer Steam codes first, because that's easiest for us, but we usually have other codes too. However, unfortunately if you don't have any kind of proof of your purchase, we might not be able to offer you a key. :( If you do have some kind of a proof, please email us. Just a picture of the physical disk is fine too.

So without a proof, yes you would need to buy the game again. However it's currently on sale on GOG.cm if you're interested.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but thank you for your understanding. And let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers!

As I said, I do have the disk; it's required for the disk check DRM Frozenbyte implemented into the initial release. Hopefully, whomever answers my email will have some coupon codes for GOG or HumbleStore available. If I have to buy another copy of a game I already own just to remain DRM-free and get patches, Frozenbyte will have lost me as a customer.

I continue to be disappointed by Frozenbyte's decision-making:

1. A Steam-free, DRM-free version of Trine 2 for Windows took far, far too long to release.

2. Frozenbyte needs to work on their advertising. I had no idea Trine 3 had even been released until visiting the forum for this situation. I don't read gaming websites (e.g., IGN) and I don't use Steam. However, I do read the news on several tech/gaming sites (e.g., Ars Technica). So, tell me, how do you market to people like me? You are missing a large demographic of people who could be playing your games...if they knew about them.

3. There was obviously some serious budget mismanagement for Trine 3. Not to mention the transition to 3D was entirely unnecessary. Trine 1 and 2 were a beautiful side-scrollers. This mechanic made them unique and nostalgic, as side scrollers aren't very common these days. It separated Trine from so many of the other games out there. With the transition 3D, you lost what Trine was known for. Word of advice: don't mess with a good formula.

4. This situation with no longer hosting patches for Trine released on disk is ridiculous, and amounts to a forced "upgrade" (*cough* Windows 10 *cough*). Customers shouldn't have to contact you like this. BioWare is far from an ideal game house at this point and they still host all patches for Mass Effect 1, ME2, Dragon Age, etc, despite moving to Origin.

5. I haven't tried Shadwen, yet. I may or may not. I will say this, though: a permanent escort quest? Has anyone there played WoW? I've watched game footage, so I realize the implementation isn't the same, but I'm not sure that's the best concept to build an entire game on. After missteps with release for Trine 2 and Trine 3, I don't think Frozenbyte can't afford many more.

After reading up on the debacle surrounding Trine 3, I will say this: yes, there certainly should be a Trine 4. It should be about the length of Trine 2, revert to being a side-scroller, have skill trees to encourage variations in play style, and have something of a tidier ending. In other words, the game everyone expected Trine 3 to be.

Thank you for your feedback! Here are some answers for you:

I have heard quite a few individuals saying that they forget that we are just a smaller studio. It's nice that you're comparing us to such a larger company as BioWare – but yes, we naturally don't have the same kind of resources.

We admit that the Trine 3 release didn't go well for us, but it's still a project we are proud of and hopefully we can use our experience from it in our future projects. Also hopefully we can also return to work on the Trine series someday, because it's definitely close to our hearts.

Please also note that we aren't forcing anyone to upgrade to Trine Enchanted Edition. There hasn't been updates to Trine for a while now, and I think it's natural that we are investing to the channels we use now.

Also if you're interested in stealth games, I hope you'll give Shadwen a shot. We have tried to make sure that Lily, the child that's being escorted, isn't too frustrating or resulting in annoying game overs. Also if she is doing something strange you can rewind time and ask her to walk somewhere else. :)

I hope this cleared things a little, but feel free to tell me if you have any other questions to us and I can also forward them to other teams if needed.

Cheers and thank you for your support!
