Can Steam and Non-Steam People Play Together?

Postby gamecreator » Mon Dec 26, 2011 1:04 am

Just that simple question: if I buy the game on Steam, can I play online multiplayer with someone who bought a non-Steam copy (like from Direct2Drive)?

Thank you!

I ask because I just had trouble buying from Direct2Drive (they couldn't authorize me by phone - I guess they're out today) so I'd like to buy from a more hassle-free source like Steam, but my friend got a non-Steam version. I want to make sure we can play together even though he doesn't have Steam.

I answered my own question. I bought the game from GameStop and it automatically goes through Steam after install.

And to add to this - we had a fair share of trouble with Trine 1 channels, and since this we decided that all Windows-channels, online or retail, MUST use Steamworks, no exceptions accepted.

On Mac side Mac App Store has it's own multiplayer system and updates.
