Some Shadowgrounds *gameplay movies* :)

Postby Geo » Wed May 03, 2006 11:16 am

I've been using this cool file streaming service Putfile.com to share gameplay movies from various games (mainly City of Heroes), but I am enjoying Shadowgrounds so much I decided to add some from that too. :)

Here are a couple from my early adventures. I've gotten a little further but I don't want to spoil some of the later nastier surprises. :)

I have to confess: I had NO idea you could shoot up the green crates for ammo and weapons. I only stumbled upon that accidentally when firing away at one point. Oops.

If their site isn't messed up, these should take you to a streaming movie page for each. Hope you enjoy watching my sloppy firing. :)

Heh, sounds cool. Literally, because I couldn't see anything in the videos (probably a codec problem on my end) but I could hear them. 8)

These are "MPEG-2" format. If your computer has the latest Window Media Player (version 10), it should work. :? You might check under Tools>Options>Player tab to see if the "download codecs automatically" option is checked.

I checked around and I guess technically you need some sort of DVD decoder installed for Windows Media Player to play these OK. I just found this format to look a whole lot better than the more common MPEG 1.

I did find this Microsoft free utility that will check if such an encoder's installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en

It's a tad laborious, but you can still get the free Dr. Divix codec (which I think is what I use) if you get their "play" bundle and just uncheck the "use-15 day Divx Pro Trial Version" checkbox. This then installs the older free version which'll let Media Player play MPEG 2 movies fine. :)

That's over here:
http://www.divx.com/divx/codec.php

Another possibility is "Stinky's MPEG-2 codec":

Here's some more shorter movies (*spoilers* of sort if you have only played the demo, but might as well see what yer missing 8) ).

(a rare case of me using strategy rather than running around shooting everything in sight :)).

Click here to watch Shadowgrounds railgun ricochet (be sure to hit the PAUSE button to enjoy the ricochet effect). I love the weapon, ammo is understandably very hard to come by for it.

And a couple longer ones (will take a while to load):

Click here to watch Shadowgrounds minigun in very sloppy action :) (FRAPS bogs my frame rate in these situations so it was harder to aim).

Click here to watch Shadowgrounds grenades sloppy demonstration (This at least demonstrates how monsters Don't always rush you. :D

NOTE: Am re-doing these in the more easier to view MPEG-1 format...

The Windows thing is just a "checker," it won't actually enable MPEG-2 play.

If the "Stinky" codec won't work, you could try this freeware MPEG "Filter":
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Dsc ... ilters.htm

I can't vouch for any of these, so use at your own risk, but it seems like it should do the trick.

I think in my case I just have a DVD playersoftware that added some codecs on its own a while back.

At some point I'll try something else, but the regular MPEG files were too large and too blurry to enjoy much.

Maybe Joel can explain what he did. :?

What browser do you use?

I use Firefox at home, and the movies stream fine. Here at work, they don't work in IE. So, sorry, I'm stumped at the moment.

I don't know if these codecs help, cause the Putfile movies stream directly from a Web page. Not directly from Windows Media Player itself.

Hey if anyone else here is SUCCESSFULLY viewing my movies, could you maybe share with us what you think is enabling you to view MPEG2 stuff? Codecs or what not. I hate to think this thread's getting hundreds of page views from people who can't view my stuf.

If it's really a problem I'll figure out some more common format to use.

I used my dad's computer actually. He always has the latest software installed (and that includes some really crappy stuff too). I remember that at least Firefox worked, but I'm pretty sure I also checked with IE. I only hear sounds on my laptop (and I don't really want to go installing too much stuff on this).

The files load quite a while before anything shows up. Then it's still empty but you have to press the Play button. At least that's how it worked for me. (Haven't had the chance to watch the new ones yet.)

Do you have Quicktime player (the free movie player) installed? I checked under Tools>Options>Download tab>Download Actions, and the Quicktime Plugin is what's assigned to let the browser view MPEG4 and MPEG stuff.

I don't have Quicktime installed at work, I think, so I'm wondering if maybe that's the missing piece of the puzzle.

If you don't have Quicktime, and you've installed one of those MPEG codecs, you'd need to assign Windows Media player in the "Download Actions" thing I mentioned above for the browser to view that stuff. In theory. :?

I'll try this at work later today to see if my theory again fails. :P

I'm going to switch to MPEG1 format. I've researched, and Quicktime can't play MPEG2 stuff in pages unless it has a $20 add on. Apparently at home I had some pre-installed DVD player stuff that has it.

So I'd like to make it work but if you want to give up on me I certainly don't blame you.

This below is a test of a short movie in MPEG1 format (more common, shouldn't require a special player):

In IE, you need ActiveX controls enabled to view. The inline player you should see is definitely Windows Media Player, not Quicktime (even in Firefox).

Forget it then. Sorry. I won't post any more movies. I don't have file space or the bandwidth to post stuff for download.
