I always thought that Shadow Grounds was built on the Source(R) Engine
Seeing as its advertised on Steam (R) What engine is it actually built on ?[/list]

Our own engine. :)

Steam accepts all kinds of games if they are good enough, it's not a Source-exclusive service.

Another example on Steam is Red Orchestra, which is a mod based on one of the Unreal engines by Epic, which is ostensibly though of as a competitor to Valve.

Eventually, it turned out the Red Orchestra dev team decided to change to the Source engine for their next "full game" incarnation, even though they had won a "Make it Unreal" Unreal engine license worth a ton of money. :?

Source is the engine Half Life 2 was built on, Steam is an online distribution method, the two have nothing in common. Shadowgrounds uses its own engine, Red Orchestra uses Unreal Engine 2, and both are being sold online through Steam.
