Linux: Sound problem - Ubuntu 11.04

Postby Spacecraft » Wed Apr 13, 2011 8:51 pm

The player sounds - weapons, in-game voices - only come out of my right speaker, whereas the in-game music and loading screen narration play normally through both.

My audio source system wide is my Razer Megalodon headphones.

I was unable to reproduce this. The problem is probably somewhere in your setup...

I actually have kind of the same problem - didn't realize until I put on my headphones. The soundtrack, narration, etc come out as stereo, but sound effects come out of one side only. And if I'm not mistaken, ambient sounds come out of one and weapon sounds come out of the other..

I've noticed a similar issue on ubuntu 10.10 with pulseaudio disabled, come to think of it, shadowgrounds was only playing some sounds, character dialogue, on one speaker too.

Similar issue here. When I play the game it seems that some sounds are not being played (only sometimes). I have this problem with Shadowgrounds and to a much lesser degree with Trine. After a while of playing the sound goes away completely (Shadowgrounds only).
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and pulseaudio. I tried running the game on a seperate X-Server (which usually helps performance and the games use ALSA instead of pulseaudio). It works like this:
  • add yourself to the audio group
    sudo adduser $USER audio
  • CTRL+ALT+F1 to switch to a virtual terminal, login with your user credentials
  • start an x-server with
    xinit -- :1
  • move the mousecursor into the xterm window and start the game
    cd $HOME/shadowground && ./shadowgrounds-launcher

Using this you get better perfomance and the soundproblems seem to be better, too. But they don't go away. I will try to switch to OSS next.

Okay. I got the sound working properly. The problem seems to be that the alsa libraries shipping with Shadowgrounds don't work properly with Ubuntu. You can fix the problems by linking to the alsa libraries that ship with Ubuntu. Maybe it is even enough just removing the libraries (this should work if the games use /usr/lib as the searchpath for libraries, too).

Anyway. Here is how to link to you libraries which Ubuntu ship with the packages libasound2 and libasound2-plugins. I am assuming you installed the game below your user folder

Code: Select all

cd $USER/shadowgrounds/lib32
mv libasound.so.2{,.bak}
mv libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so{,.bak}
ln -s /usr/lib/libasound.so.2
ln -s /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so

After this change I just regularly ran the game (not using a seperate x-server) and it worked fine. I played through 2 levels without sound issues. The same probably works for the other games.

I'm affected by the bug too (Gentoo Linux 64bit)
it happens after *some time* of playing, not long though
then most sounds play only on the left while the music and bird noises remain stereo
it seems that generating multiple sounds at once by clicking very fast with the wizzard for example does make some play in stereo
so during normal gameplay most sounds stick to the left until there's more action then a few play on both sides

try it with headphones and try to generate lots of sound effects

I have tried to make the game use some system libraries like libopenal and libogg/libvorbis, and updating them to the latest versions also updating alsa-lib to the latest not yet stable versions but it didn't help, the bug happens with both trine-bin64 and trine-bin32

A mono option would be a temporary solution.

I believe this has been fixed.

Unofficial update here, should be available at the official site some time later:

What about Shadowgrounds where this happens more prominently?

Not sure if someone encountered this but I got no sound when I enter the game. It used to working but now for some reason there is no sound. I went into my sound options and sound mixer and the options are fine.
It's weird to play this game without sound :/
Someone help
