Renderer initialization failure (Linux)

Postby Drkitch » Wed Oct 19, 2011 1:07 am

I get a Renderer initialization failure no matter the graphics setting.
The error log that I got from Shadowgrounds Survivor.
Am I missing files? I reinstalled a couple times and redownloaded the installer.
Trine works fine

I'm running OpenSuSE 11.4 (64bit)
My GPU is Radeon HD 6670 with the latest proprietary driver installed.

It sounds like it could be a corrupt download but if you've already downloaded it a few times then that's probably not it. It could be that something is preventing the installer from performing correctly, because those errors are not normal (the game is full of "normal" errors but if it can't find locale files, then that's a bit problematic, although it might be the Linux version is set up a bit differently and that could cause the files to be reported as errors even if it's all correct). I'm not sure what could cause that at this point but I'm sure we get it worked out...

You could try manually unzipping the files - check the Linux FAQ for that (basically just "unzip replace.run" but the FAQ might have some other useful info as well).

Manually unzipping it yields the same result. I also opened up the "survivor.run" file with a zip file viewer to see if i could locate the files that way, but they aren't there so I guess I'll try downloading it again? Does the Survivor game depend on any files from the original Shadowgrounds? I'm also getting the same "renderer initialization failure" with shadowgrounds, but it isn't even outputting a log file so I'm not sure what's going on with that.

made some progress. Found some of the missing files in the "data#.fbz" compressed files, but in a different spot (in "./Data/Locale/Common" instead of "./Data/Locale/en"). Uncompressing the "data#.fbz", moving the files, recompressing and replacing took care of the missing files. I haven't found all the missing files yet, but I'll send an update once I've moved everything.

The more I look at those the more I think that's probably not the final solution to the problem... Some of those should be "needed" (like the cinematic_m*.txt files) but most of the other ones aren't needed as they have been combined into other files such as gui_bigfile.txt and subtitles_bigfile.txt or so. There should be a config file in the Locales folder that defines which files should be needed...

So... Since Trine runs fine I don't know if this can be a graphics driver problem, so I'm not sure what to suggest next...

This is your problem. You don't have 32-bit compatibility library for your GPU. The package is called fglrx something. On Debian it would be fglrx-glx-ia32 or libfglrx-ia32.
