game will not launch!

game will not launch!

cannot launch game on steam. never have been able. error message is "this application has failed to start because d3dx9_31.dll was not found. re-installing the application may fix this problem." do i need to re-install? how do i do this without a cd? purchased game on steam. thank you!

When was the last time you updated Direct X? If it's been a while, or never, do so now.

it says i am up to date. directX 9.0. what else can i try? what about re-installing? how do i do that?

Did you actually try running the installer (dxwebsetup.exe)?

Also, have you tried updating drivers for your video card? (Always another good place to start if you ever have any issues with a game.)

follow the instructions.

Unzip the download and make sure the dll is placed in the same folder as your games executable.

For some reason Vista doesn't include that file by default (I assume, haven't actually checked) so this is why the problem appears to some people with Vista or bad install of DirectX. Re-installing should help, but you can also place the file in the same directory as the game, as suggested above (however it's always better to fix the problem correctly, i.e. get DirectX installed properly).
