Crashes on SGS, Road to Atlantis

Postby Mr. ShadowStealer » Sun May 11, 2008 6:04 pm

I have occured a lot of crashes just in the first three missions of this game.

I have Steam's 1.08 version of this game.

First ones happened right in the beginning of the Road to Atlantis mission and those were some serious crashes. My computer just rebooted on its own if I had stood on my place too much or I had move towards the place where I had came from. Also if I shot even one shot from my pistol the game caused my computer to reboot and if I switched to hte assault rifle the same things happened.

This crash could be fixed with enabling the Hardware 3D.

Well, the next crash happened at that narrow canyon which leads to the first boss fight area. I crashed there too no matter what I had on my hand and so on but thankfully enabling the Hardware 3D helped to this crash too and I actually could finish the first part of the Road to Atlantis.

When the second part of it starts I don't have any text or voice message scrolling on the screen when that pre-mission picture comes up so I just click start. I think this is a feature, is it?

On the second part of the Road to Atlantis mission, or the third mission in the game, I have very slim chances not to crash when I go inside the eletric fence area where you can't get out before you have killed some enemies. I immediatelly crash if I go inside the fence area EVEN I have the Hardware 3D acceleration.

Well, disabling the sounds once again helps but this time it doesn't make that area crash-proof. I managed to survive there some time but after I touched the other fence in the direction where I should have gone, I crashed again. I didn't see any enemies coming at me any more so I think it was a bug in the scripts or something which caused the crash.

And enabling the Hardware 3D helps me so that the game doesn't cause my whole computer reboot because of a "stop message," at least windows calls it like that, had happened but the game just crashes on the desktop.

So there could be a link between sounds and the crashes in the game.

I have Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB AGP graphic card.
Sound Blaster Live! sound card (very old by now. I think it was released on the year 2003.)
1GB of RAM.
And Single core AMD Athlon XP-M 2600+ processor. (Socket-A, in other words EXTREMELY old by now.)

And I have the latest drivers for the graphic card, no doubt of that and I should also have the latest working drivers for my sound card too.

Any ideas what could be causing these crashes?

PS. :D My account still works even I haven't written anything here since the first Shadowgrounds came out.

Edit: Oh yeah one more thing even this isn't related to crashes.

I noticed that when you haven't launched the story mode of the game even once and you bind your keys, run the survival mode and then press esc and check the options, all the key binds are set to none. In other words they won't get saved and they get reseted to default ones. After you launch the story mode at least once, it works just fine and your binds are saved.

I think it is time to do a new post. :P

Anyway. I think most of the crashes are related to the Marine Rifle because when I hold it on my hands the game has crashed most. When I was reloading and took a hit from those spider things which shoot laser, I crashed.

When I entered the force field area and hold my Marine rifle on my hands, I crashed.

When I have fought in the force field are and I have held Marine rifle on my hands when the cutscene should play, I have crashed.

When I use my pistol, nothing like this happens. So either the issues are somehow related to sounds or to the marine rifle or maybe even to the both.

Icrashed even when I was opening the gate on the Road to Atlantis level's second part and I stood still too long while holding my Marine rifle on my hands because I was upgrading my weapons.

Edit: Yeah, there's definitely something weird going on with the marine rifle/pulse rifle because now on the mission "missing backups" the game crashed again near the medical tables which were beeping and I was again holding the marine rifle in my hands when it happened.

Aaand now I have come to a point from which I can't continue anymore.

It is the Episode 4 5 hours earlier point. When I finish the Oops mission where the airship has done crash landing the cutscene plays just flawlessly but when the unloading data and loading data periods are over and the pre-mission talk moment of that female "sniper" character should come, the game just crashes.

The picture flashes very quickly on my screen and then it crashes rebooting my computer. Disabling the sounds and Hardware 3D doesn't help at all. Having different weapon than the Pulse rifle/marine rifle on the hand while finishing the level doesn't do anything and neither does having different amounts of ammunation in the weapons when I'm going to finish the level.

So.

My only hope is now that you got enough information to pinpoint this crashing bug and fix it so I could continue my game and finish it too.

Damn, very sorry to hear this. Rebooting is very serious and should never happen. I would take a guess and say this is a hardware+code issue, and possibly even related to the sound engine we use (FMOD). Has the game rebooted anymore after turning on Hardware 3D sounds?

Now, does the game crash during the speech in the Rude Awakening mission (after Oops), or after the speech when pressing Start? Either way, that's at least an easy way to test this crash/solutions.

Do you get a notification with an OK box, or such? A screenshot would help a lot, even if it doesn't have any real information.

I'd suggest you check for newer drivers in any case, or even just different versions. Sound Blaster Live! is still widely used I think, so if it was a pure hardware problem, there'd be more reports from users. Motherboard drivers might also be of interest, although I'll leave it up to you to see if you want to update them.

Sorry that I can't offer any other help just yet - we haven't seen this before so it's a bit tough. I'll try to reply a bit quicker next time.

Hmm hmm... I don't think so. It has only kicked me on my desktop with the regular windows' error message window telling that this program did an illegical thing and so on. But during the Rude Awakening mission's start the game still crashes and causes my computer to reboot no matter do I have the Hardware 3D on or off or do I even have sounds on.

I could always send you the windows' crash dumps if you have a way to open those. ;)

Well, it is a bit hard to say does it actually "crash during the speech" because the picture just flashes very quickly without any speech or text at all before it causes reboot. Only the background picture manages to load up and then the game crashes. In other words, no the game doesn't cause my computer to reboot during the speech or after it because it reboots my computer before that speech even starts.

I think the problem is that the game tries to load the sound file and buffer it and play it on-sync with the text but there happens something why it can't load it and it causes the crash. It could be a missing sound file, even I doubt it very strongly, or it could be just some compatibility issue with that exact sound file and with my sound card.

But that doesn't completely explain why the game likes to crash more during the marine mission when I have the marine rifle on my hands instead of the pistol but I guess it could be still somehow related to the sounds which the rifle uses.

I'll take a picture next time when I crash and I also could give you the crash dump with it and all the other things which it creates to send to Microsoft.

I'll check the motherboard and graphic card's drivers but I doubt I'll find any newer versions for my Sound Blaster Live! because this really is almost the first Live! cards which were created and I have had to do some hunting to find latest drivers for this. :P I used to have Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 but... Well, it story got fried with a screw.

And that's okay. :) I have old hardware. I could always give you the Dxdiag's system report log because people quite often want to have that too and your speed of replying is just fine.

(By the way. Your smilies don't get added on my text when I click on them. :D I have to take each picture's properties and find out what is the "alternative text" for it to add them. I have Firefox and I have smilies enabled. ;))

fantarama, your problem is not the same one as the original post. In your case I'd suggest updating A) graphics drivers, or B) Ageia PhysX drivers ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/ageia_8.04.25_whql.html ). Does the blue screen happen at the end of the first level? Can you be a bit more specific, i.e. by "last gate" do you mean the area where the storage junkyard ends and the canyon begins, and the mission will soon end (fading to black)?

ShadowStealer, we'll try to figure out what could be causing the problems...

One more thing before I get time to post some pictures at the crash areas and other things.

I can't see the Kills and Survival times under each mission's picture when I take the load game option.

Every single one of those have 0 kills and 00:00:00 survival time. I think this is the cause of the crash on the second level and I didn't quit the game before that.

But in the game I can see the survival time just fine when I hit the "upgrade weapons" button or at least somewhere I saw the survival time while I'm playing one of the missions.

I'll try to update my PhysX drivers too.

And I read about the thing that you are going to upgrade the maps. So I thought I'll report this too. There's a light without its pole on the second mission aka the first part of the road to atlantis. It is in the quite beginning and the light is left at the right side of the player when he's heading to the right direction and I think the light also slowly waved back and forth at that place.

If you can't find it, it is in the very beginning of the game and it is quite in the beginning of the map. I can't clearly remember was the mission road to atlantis but at least it is in the beginning of the game. :P

I've already tried to update the Ageia Physx to the last drivers on Nvidia site, but same problem, i've tried to play with SB Audigy and the onboard Nvidia soundstorm audio, tried to set low game setting and high, but exactly at the point you say, when the game begin to fade to black the game crash. Playing the first level i've no problem, no audio distorsion, no graphisc error and correct fps. Just i've already told, sometimes crash also at the begin of the first level, after 100% loading. I've also tried to disconnect all usb and close all programs like antivirus etc.

Ok. There's something very weird shit going on with this game right now.

I haven't played this game in a few days and now when I loaded it up it had reseted the profile to the default one TOTALLY ON ITS OWN. I have done absolutely nothing to the profile settings.

Also the sound, music and the other sliders were reseted totally. All the music was almost at the max and speech was at the max and so on as they are by default.

Also the mouse's turning speed and spring were reseted totally and now I can't find the correct settings anymore and it feels just pure crap.

Thankfully the keybind stayed the same. This game really needs fixing and badly.

Edit: Also the graphic settings are screwed too. All the settings are reseted to the default values.

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON? Seriously.

All what I have done to the SGS between the time when it worked, somewhat, and the time I started playing it again was that from the Games list I took the properties, local files tab and verify integrity of the game cache.

I think that caused the fact that all the values are reseted to the default ones but really. Any game shouldn't act like that.

ShadowStealer, sorry to hear. But it's the verify game files stuff that does that... It could be handled a little better on Steam's part, because it shouldn't touch files that are not part of the original installation (in my opinion). Of course, if you used the Default profile originally too, then I think Steam did it "correctly" because it needs to check the files against the originals etc, but obviously it's not fun when the settings are reseted.

Also, the savegames that can be downloaded in the links I've provided in many threads use the Default profile.

What we could try by the way, for both of you, is disabling the physics. This could actually have an effect on many things, so let's see. Here's what I wrote in another thread:

To disable physics, open the console in the main menu by pressing F8. Then write "/physics_enabled 0" and "/physics_update 0" (and press enter in between). You can also use the Tab to autofill the command. And first you might want to put "/console_loglevel 4" and "/loglevel 4" but they are more or less optional.

Here's an example:

I've tried to download the saved game of second level and disabled physics by command posted but the system still crash...why?!

I figure this is the spot to post some similar woes. =]

After enabling debug mode & disabling the physics in the console, I was fine until exploding a red barrel in a corner near a fence where 3-4 Wrenchers [name?] swarm at you. This is just before the open area with many crates and boxes and a few marine/civilian bodies, just before the exit area. The game crashed reliably 3-4 times when blowing that barrel up, so I avoided that and finished the level.

On Road to Atlantis, I'm fine until getting to where the two spiders are behind a low wall, where I've crashed a few times from what may be the lasers firing, but DEFNITELY from the act of shooting a black Wrencher running around there. I'm fairly sure its a certain black one, as I haven't crashed yet from any reds in that spot. The crashes are reliable, either from the spider's shots, killing them, or the black wrencher, and so I'm having trouble getting past that area.

*UPDATE* After crashing repeatedly with the config files restored to normal, I'm able to kill the wrencher and spiders with a grenade fine, but when either pistol or rifle shot hits the lone black wrencher or sometimes the spiders (or when they fire at me), the game crashes out.

The crash behaves exactly like what happens when physics aren't disabled-exe crash to the desktop with Dr. Watson error.

I am running the game at 1280X960 with almost all settings at low, and filtering/AA disabled, with distortion on [crashed with it off as well]. I have made changes to the config.txt and default_game_options.txt files, while saving a backup copy of them. Changes have consisted of adjusting some of the graphics options to be lower or not present to increase framerate, [using common sense], turning on the flashlight energy loss/recharge, increasing camera range slightly, showing FPS and player position for debugging. I will load a backup copy to troubleshoot again, even though the crashes have happened before & after I made changes other than saving the debug logging and *all* physics options in the file set to 0. *restored to defaults for troubleshooting*

I have a Mobile Athlon XP 2600-M slightly underclocked to 1.5Ghz due to room temps, and so there *could* also be a chance something is odd about those, if all three of us have a mobile Athlon XP. I also have a SB Live Platinum, which is close (if not the same) to what Shadowstealer has. I'm running it with Hardware enabled, EAX disabled, Stereo, 44K. I'm thinking its *not* the cause for this, but will also try it with Hardware off. I also use the Marine Rifle almost exclusively, and I will try killing with the Pistol to see if it makes a difference...life will be hard till I get enough parts if that is the case. X|

On a probable side note, on the console I have noticed many Localization errors, which I assume is because I am running the demo, and certain files/scripts/etc aren't present. Any input on those would be appreciated, and I have no idea if those could be related.

The logs are full of meaningless errors, the only ones worth a look in crash problems are ones that have WARNING or ERROR at the beginning, and even most of those are not anything important. (Of course, each error means _something_, it just isn't relevant to the game's functionality or the crashes).

I would be inclined to believe that these are somehow sound-related and/or physics-related. Could be some sound thing that is used in conjunction with physics.

Here's all the known people who have this problem (for my own use mostly):

frostcat @ Steam (95% crash)
AMD X2 5000 dualcore
GF8600GT 256
2GB RAM
Vista 32 bit

nilkilla @ Steam (95% crash, physics disable and then random crashes ingame)
amd x2 processor
2 gigs or ram
crosshair mobo
2x 7950 gx2s

Mr. ShadowStealer (random crashes ingame)
AMD Athlon XP-M 2600+
1GB of RAM
Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB AGP
Sound Blaster Live!

Frosty (95% crash, physics disable then random crashes ingame)
AMD Mobile Athlon XP 1800+ 1.49 Ghz
ECS K7S5A Motherboard (retail BIOS, not newest)
XFX Geforce 7600 GT 256MB DDR3 4X AGP with driver 6.14.11.7474/6.14.11.7516
Soundblaster Live Platinum (5.1)
WINXP Pro Version 2002 SP2

What we can deduct here is that it seems to happen only on AMD processors, on Mobile versions and on X2 versions. Happens on Vista and XP. Two have SB Live!, other two unknown. Graphics cards vary, with three nVidias and one ATi. I'll try to get the sound card info from the Steam users to see if they have SB Live! too...

I was able to get farther by using the pistol only, and was really getting into it with the upgrade. >=D The crashes are not random, but have been caused so far by blowing up a certain barrel in Wake Up Call [hadn't tried blowing it up with a grenade], and by shooting various wrenchers and spiders in the area near the beginning of Road to Atlantis. Rarely it will crash when a barrel blows up in that area, maybe 1/10-15 times. Crashes happen most frequently with the Assault Rifle, less frequently with the Pistol, and less than that with Grenades. The crash happens with either hitting the creature or the final shot with all three weapons.

I'm thinking that the issue is going to be some odd thing that the older AMD cpus can't handle, and/or a slight incompatibility with PhysIX. I'm saying this because I played through the Shadowgrounds Demo with no crashes, and no audio problems. I don't know how the audio calls and such are different from the first game though, and if the other's sound cards/chips are varied enough, that helps. I'm hoping we won't have to pitifully ask Nvidia to update the PhysIX driver for AMD cpus...Ack.

Here is the last chunk of the log file from the last attempt, with some warnings.

I am going to play with the sound disabled to try and eliminate that as the issue, and reply back fairly quickly.

I hope they don't eat me with this disadvantage...in Atlantis, no one can hear you gurgle.

Sorry about that last chunk, I just realized what the log_errors file was for...

Good news, at least for this error. With sound disabled, I was able to get past that area into the next one, where I promptly had the cocky feeling of killing my first few scytheworms ruined by flaming red balls of swarming spider death. Moral of the story is, we need to find a way to get our sound working reliably. I'll try and get some sort of sound driver update. I still don't know why PhysIX has to be disabled, but thats a separate issue I guess. =]

Downloaded the latest driver from Creative for the Live series and WIN XP, and it adds a little FPS, but the issue continues with the sound enabled, Hardware and EAX or neither, at 44 & 22K. It seems to center around firing shots most of the time, not necessarily ones that have to hit a creature or kill it, with the ocassional hit barrel causing it. I'm looking forward to see what other sound cards everyone else has. =]

Managed to finish the demo after multiple crashes of the same type, so am going to buy it and hope for the best. Thanks for the help, and I'll start a new topic here once I get the full version if I continue to have problems.

Weird... Where's my post?

I guess I have to repost it...

Anyway, in that post I apologized the way how I wrote my message but I had a bad day and I wanted to play SGS at least in the survival mode but even that didn't work well because of totally reseted settings.

Anyway.

I set the loglevels to 4 and physic things to 0 and this time I managed to see the alien cutscene and also go in the briefing menu and actually see the text and hear the voice without the crash. When I pressed start even after that I didn't crash with reboot but when I was actually in the level, turned my flashligh on and turned to look behind me towards those very tall rocks, I crashed with rebooot.

When I looked at the log file there's damn many warnings and debugs but I think very many of those are from the oops level because I played it before I went on the mission where I normally crashed.

Frosty, did you get the game running ok, or still problems?

ShadowStealer, no clue about your post. I had a busy weekend and was able to visit only now. Sounds extremely weird what you described, but at least it's one more thing that could help.

Anyway, thanks for all the posts guys, we'll try to figure out something. It's quite tricky but let's see if we could find something... If we fail finding an answer within this week, let's figure out something else via pm.

I got through the demo, after making sure to avoid the various items and creatures that would cause the crash. It would usually be a specific creature, barrel, and projectile weapon causing it, while using grenades to kill seemed to make it happen a lot less.

I got a copy of SGS for cheap, and beat it, getting stuck on a few levels the same way, and at least 10 times on "Mechanized" at the area where you walk inside the grey garage looking area after making a right turn about 2/3 through the level. It was either a creature or a barrel I think, but could never see what exactly. Past that, there were less instances of the crash in the missions.

I can live with the issue till I get different hardware, as now I have played it through, but not being able to have physics on very low or low will be an issue for me in the future due to the direction I want to take a mod and getting the secrets. I finished the game with 8/20 and unlocked the first 3 bonuses, but after displaying the achievement in the ending, they didn't save, even after quitting and restarting. Not too worried about it, just annoying. =p

Ok.

We may have got the Start button crash fixed and if so, I hope we can ride the good luck and fix this problem as well.

Oh well, as I stated in the other topic, it didn't help me even works, technically speaking.

Anyway, I noticed that I got these two files in my shadowgrounds survivor folder and because they have dbg in the end of their file name I thought it means DeBuG.

The files are:
pixel_shader_dbg.txt
vertex_shader_dbg.txt

I think those came when I set the logging level to 4.

They say the following:

pixel_shader_dbg.txt
"File: Data\Shaders\glow_8tex_pixel_shader.txt

Output: (1): error X2001: shader version expected"

And the vertex_shader_dbg.txt
"File: Data\Shaders\ati_shadow_bone_vertex_shader_flat.txt

Output: (1): error X2001: shader version expected"
