Level Editor Beta 4

Postby fb_joel » Thu May 11, 2006 7:11 pm

The Level Editor Beta 4 is now available. Everyone who has the earlier Beta can download the new one too - it's in the same place as Beta 3 was.

Here's some disclaimers from the earlier thread:

Please note that this is NOT an "official" release, and it is not meant for public distribution. That said, the Beta is perfectly suitable for starting to create your own missions/mods. It features all the tools/features that will be in the official release. We're keeping the Beta release "limited" because we need time for the documentation and some other minor stuff - and of course some user testing.

I will not provide a link directly here, because we want to keep a certain level of control (so that the Beta isn't distributed further). This release is only meant for people who visit this board and are eager to start playing around with the Level Editor.

If you want the Beta, post a message to this thread indicating that you want the Beta, and I will send you the Beta via Private Message.

The Level Editor documentation (drafts) can be found at http://www.shadowgroundsgame.com/new/in ... ge=editor2 . I will be updating the documentation throughout the next few weeks. It is nowhere near complete at the time of writing and features some temp stuff.

If you have problems/questions, create a new thread (unless it's a very small question). I will try to answer them to the best of my abilities (but I'm no expert honestly).

You should take backup copies of the Shadowgrounds.exe and storm3dv2.dll in your Shadowgrounds directory, just in case.

The only difference between Beta 3 and Beta 4 is a new template map (this time with no extra stuff in it!). And of course now you can also play the missions. :)

Update 1: I updated the Launcher filename so it's not Shadowgrounds Launcher.exe and overwrites the original SG Launcher file. (And there'll be some (localization missing) texts before you activate the Sample mod.

Note: Do not try the Level Editor Beta 4 on Steam version. I have no idea what would happen right now. I will, however, test it myself soon. Rest assured, though, Steam version will get the official Level Editor release when it's released and it will work great.

Cheers,
Joel

At first - NICE documentation there already!! This is real good and also invites the common nonprofessional user to try the editor!

One question - will the mods created with this be -fully- compatible to the final release? So that I can reopen them in the final editor, edit them etc.?

O really, so dont do it on steam. Ok, I wont. That is what I have it on. In that case just tell me what happens with you later today. If it works then I will do it.

Sure.

Anyways, I tested the Level Editor with Steam, and I wasn't successful. I forgot that the Level Editor needs the Data files to work, and Steam uses their own system so it doesn't work. Steam users have to wait for the official update unfortunately. :( (That could be late next week at the earliest, and probably next-next week.)

Oh well, that is ok. It gives me more time to beat the game. I am on level 7, and it looks like tyhe beginning of a tough one.

French version not working here!

Postby fleshling » Sat May 13, 2006 9:22 pm

Hello, i've just bought the french version of the game and i seem to have the same problem, it says that the first cd isn't inserted. Which drives me nuts. No fancy daemon tools or whatever here, just a brand new game that doesn't work.
Please send me a link where i can find the beta4 exe, since it seems to be the only way available right now to fix it.
Sending it at my e-mail adress would be lovely too :p
Thanks in advance, i want to play that nice game already!

To summarize :

-French version
-Tried with 1.0 and 1.01, same error.
-Tried everything else!

Be well.

this is for a map editor, not for some fancy patch that will fix the copyright problems

Well to be honest, he did ask for the Level Editor (because it does actually fix the French problem). So it's alright you know. :)

There are a lot of people requesting the editor, but I see few questions. Let me know if you need a tutorial for something, maybe I allready found out. Or if you find something out, which is in fact quite easy once you know how it goes, consider writing a tutorial about it.

When the level editor is finished and downloadable, how long will the forums remain up for people to upload their mods?

Hmm? The forums are here to stay. At some point in time we may change the forums to general "Frozenbyte Games Forums" but you can count on the fact that there will be a place for Shadowgrounds fans to talk and distribute mods for many years to come. And I'm pretty sure there will be some kind of "Mod Central" someday in the future too (maybe by an enthusiast fan or so).
