Indeed it most likely is. I'm going to leave this here so people can google his name and find this out - I had to check a dozen sites to finally figure out that yes, mikerickin is a spammer of sorts. He could even be a human working in those spamming sweatshops or whatever. He's posted hundreds of "hi I'm new here" posts on various forums (they are all a little bit different and seem to have some similarities so you have to google a bit more to find out the inconsistencies, i.e. the spammers have probably created a "profile" with hundreds of information nuggets and then they take a few of those into each post, but it's not perfect) and it seems that after the first post he will post 2 more posts. At some point he'll change his signature to advertise some shady sites. It seems A LOT of sites have been "fooled", so it looks like the spammers are getting more clever and people fall into the trap. He's even posted a few "this program gives me an error, please help". (Which is pretty tough because you never know if it's a real human who's just completely lost, or a spammer like in this case - an example is here.)

Anyhow I'll block his username so he can't do any harm here. And Mike, if you really think you're not a spammer, please do send me an email at [email protected] (see the url in the browser). :D

Sure you aren't. :? I've disabled your account and deleted the spam signature. It's quite pointless to post spam here as we monitor the site quite regularly and your links won't get noticed by many people until they're gone. I'm leaving the post as an example again.

And I'm going to leave this one too. Perhaps the spammers are looking for this 'Hello Everyone' thread and use it to track things...

They probably search for it through Google, So maybe change the title of the topic?

Nah, I'm thinking of leaving this here as a spam trap. (Of course we should try to eliminate spam registrations altogether but if they get through, it's better if they just post here instead of in other threads.)

But we'll see...

Or you could installa 3D Captcha module on these forums. I think you can find one on the phpbb forum.

And if you don't know what I mean, it looks like this:

Some info:
http://code.google.com/p/3dcaptcha/

Pictures of other Captcha methods:
http://www.captcha.hu/

Also there's this one Captcha which creates letters out of ASCII characters. So far none of the known spam bots have been able to break the 3D captcha and ASCII captcha but this is just what I have read.

Or you keep it the way it is now, because the ones posting their spam here were human and a fancy stereoscopic 4D hologram captcha would do exactly nothing to stop them

Yeah I hate captchas myself so I rather use something else... But we'll see, I'll have to start investigating this stuff further when there's some extra time again. So far they haven't been a nuisance so it's easy to manually handle it (unlike e.g. the craziest phpBB2 days).
